This lovely and clean Electric Blue R53 was sold pretty much as soon as it arrived late last year.
We didn’t get a chance to give it our usual treatment, but now it’s back (due to horrendous insurance premiums for its previous ‘millennial’ owner)
It’s now getting the love it needs. First on the list is a supercharger service with all the associated water pump, gaskets etc.
It’s just had a massive service by the previous owner and a bill that goes with it, we’ll check all that was done properly.
Next … a thorough interior clean-up and a few extra’s, we think it needs white bonnet stripes, maybe some spotlights and the wheels changing.

Rat Look - The COOPER MESS !
This low mileage (we’ll talk about this later) R53 came to us with terrible paintwork. To bring it to our usual standard would be a fortune painting the lot.
So we’ve ruined it some more…. WHY ?
We wanted a ‘promo’ car, something a bit different, a head turner.
It's 'work in progress' right now and a bit of fun that hopefully you’ll see at MINI shows later this summer.
That's a Morris Minor Roof Rack BTW !
Despite the awful appearance we've gone over it mechanically (yes another supercharger service) and all the bit's that go with it.
It drives extremely well and belies it's appearance ....which is kinda the point really !
Whether we restore it at a later date is is under discussion. It kinda deserves it....
Mileage
We all do it, an obsession with ‘low mileage’ now we're not talking about Classic Aston's or Bona-Fide Concours Cars that live in a heated cocoon, we're talking regular everyday moderns.
An 18-year-old car covering a modest 8,000 a year should be on around 144,000 by now. That car has been driven, used regularly and very likely got to temperature all the components have had the oil reach them and ancillaries like the brakes and suspension had a chance to fully warm up and operate.
The low mileage one has either spent a lot of its life doing short journeys and therefore not warming up before being stopped, or it’s just spent a lot of time sitting about.
All cars ‘sweat’ that’s condensation and moisture building up, what happens with no air-flow getting around to dry that off ? RUST The Arch Enemy.
We walk away from too many low mileage ones for this very reason, we'll take the one that's been used regularly.
Sadly all too often REST = RUST
2004 FACELIFT R53 - 97,700 MILES - LOTS OF RECENT WORK - NEW MOT - SOLD CONGRATULATIONS LOUIS
Finished in Pure Silver (now quite rare) with a contrasting Jet Black roof and black accents Including an original JCW bonnet and bumper grille. 17' Bullet Alloys and premuim tyres.
It's just had a (Teflon) supercharger service with all the seals / gaskets, a new waterpump, expansion tank, coolant flush and replacement, fan resistor, drive-belt, rocker cover gasket and a comprehensive service.
We often put them through an MOT allowing a fail to highlight any issues, then we go right through it addressing these.
Now with an MOT until April 26 with new track-rod ends etc. The sub-frames have been cleaned off and treated as a preventative measure.
There's no rust in the usual places on the boot lid or rear lights.
The interior has just had a seats out deep clean. The half leather seats steam cleaned with the leather sections treated and fed.

The Dark Silver matching roof is quite unusual.
To say this bodywork is 'clean' is an understatement; it's EXCEPTIONALLY good !
No rust, no dings or scrapes and barely a stone-chip.
The 'Bullet' Alloys are shod with decent tyres all round.

Sorry now SOLD .Launched in 2005 the CHECKMATE special edition ran until the R53 ended in Nov 2006. They exclusively feature Space Blue Metallic paint, 17″ Flame spoke alloys. Additional MINI options that feature as standard: limited slip differential, Cruise Control, storage compartment pack, front foglights, on-board computer, interior lights pack, anthracite headlining & xenon headlights.
Most of the original CHECKMATE decals have been deleted for a cleaner look. The bodywork is exceptional & we've dealt with a couple of small rust patches on the rear.

This drives so well.... an easy starter, a nice slick gear change and with recent brake disks it stops well too. The supercharger is on-song with a reduced pulley and waterpump replaced by a previous owner (Yes we've checked it's all OK) It whips along with no lags and feels so fresh.

This is a 2004 - Special Edition.
A supplying dealer in 2008 confirmed it had JCW tuning to 200-BHP.
There are some JCW upgrades like the full AERO kit with colour coded wheel arches, an 11% ALTA pulley, JCW exhaust and supercharger cover.
Why the LOHEN stripes? The tuning firm do not hold records dating back this far so we cannot say....
It's just had a new Clutch and Slave Cylinder.

A new Nissens Radiator and complete Fan assembly.

The interior had our usual seats-out full on deep clean. The seats had a shampoo and steam clean, whilst the leather has been treated and the little scuffs dealt with. YUP - OCD but all the better for it.
Everything works in here, there's no nasty marks, stains, rattles or squeaks.
It's all standard in here, with the added bonus of the optional trip computer. Being a late 2004 it's just prior to the official 'Facelift' so it's gained a 3-Spoke Steering Wheel and some of the other minor tweaks soon to be introduced across the range.
The original JCW Exhaust gives off a nice 'burble' and not so loud that you'll fall out with the neighbours.
You may have noticed the rear wiper delete. It gives the rear end a sleeker look, but It's easily reversed if that's not your thing.

This is quite a find, a facelift R53 with colour coded arches and side skirts. There's some original (we think factory fitted) John Cooper Works additions; the exhaust, wheels, Aero Bumpers and Grilles.
The interior boasts a heated screen, black rooflining, trip computer, armrest and Harman Kardon sound system.
The rare Power Folding Mirrors are a nice bonus.

Although it doesn't detract from the stunning looks we should point out that the boot lid has some minor (common) rust spots and the rear bumper some tiny hairline cracks.
This is factored into the price, we could get this attended to for a further £450.
BUT we thought we'd offer it 'as is' for those with a tighter budget, these minor imperfections can always be done later when funds allow.
And this does sound amazing, not too loud that it'll annoy your neighbours ...but you'll find yourself driving with the windows down and the radio OFF !
